LABORATORY AND PILOT PLANT SERVICES
In addition to characterization and analyses, Hazen provides services related to a broad range of process technologies for coal and other fuels. Photomicrograph of Coal Sample Extensive laboratory and pilot plant facilities allow the development and demonstration of almost any process technology, from physical separation to solvent extraction and thermal treatment.

Our Mineral Separation Laboratories are equipped to study the removal of inert mineral matter from coal by gravity separation on spirals, tables, or cyclones, or sulfur removal by flotation. We have also studied chemical and physical beneficiation methods for the deep cleaning of coal so that it can be used as a fuel directly in diesel engines. Hazen is knowledgeable in technologies as diverse as chemical processing for sulfur removal and methods of vapor deposition to control self heating. In fact, our work in these areas has resulted in several patented processes. We have the technical and engineering skills for the development of such unique processes as biomass pyrolysis and gasification, fluidized-bed combustion of stockyard wastes, control of NOx and SO2 emissions, and low-rank coal upgrading. Fuel "amendments," such as limestone, dolomite, nahcolite, and soda ash, have been studied for their effect on stack-gas emissions and the nature of the ash produced.
